# LatchkeyTokenCache

> The durable, single-slot SDK `ITokenCache` for outbound OAuth, backed by the operating system credential store through [Latchkey](https://www.nuget.org/packa...

## Definition

**Assembly:** Microsoft.OData.Mcp.Authentication.dll

**Namespace:** Microsoft.OData.Mcp.Authentication.Outbound

**Inheritance:** System.Object

## Syntax

```csharp theme={null}
Microsoft.OData.Mcp.Authentication.Outbound.LatchkeyTokenCache
```

## Summary

The durable, single-slot SDK `ITokenCache` for outbound OAuth, backed by the
operating system credential store through [Latchkey](https://www.nuget.org/packages/Latchkey)
so a restart of the same service root and client id does not re-prompt the operator.

## Remarks

Per `AUTH-7` this implements the SDK interface directly; it is never wrapped in a new
`ICredentialStore` or `IOutboundTokenCache` abstraction. Per `AUTH-12` no access token,
refresh token, or client secret ever reaches a log sink: every log line that mentions a token routes
through [TokenContainer)](https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/api/microsoft.odata.mcp.authentication.outbound.outboundauthlogredactor.describetoken\(modelcontextprotocol.authentication.tokencontainer\)).

The backend map is pinned rather than left at `Auto`'s native seed, because
Windows Credential Manager caps a value at 2560 bytes — smaller than a typical
`TokenContainer`. Windows therefore uses DPAPI-sealed files, macOS the Keychain,
Linux the Secret Service, and every platform falls back to a plain file store.

## Examples

```csharp theme={null}
var cache = new LatchkeyTokenCache(new Uri("https://api.example.com/odata/"), "client-a", tokenCachePath: null, logger);
await cache.StoreTokensAsync(tokens, cancellationToken);
var restored = await cache.GetTokensAsync(cancellationToken);
```

## Constructors

###  .ctor

Initializes a new instance of the [LatchkeyTokenCache](https://ai.easyaf.dev/odata-mcp/api-reference/Microsoft/OData/Mcp/Authentication/Outbound/LatchkeyTokenCache.md) class over the operating system
credential store selected for the current platform.

#### Syntax

```csharp theme={null}
public LatchkeyTokenCache(System.Uri serviceRoot, string clientId, string tokenCachePath, Microsoft.Extensions.Logging.ILogger<Microsoft.OData.Mcp.Authentication.Outbound.LatchkeyTokenCache> logger)
```

#### Parameters

| Name | Type | Description |
| - | - | - |
| `serviceRoot` | `System.Uri` | The absolute OData service root the cached tokens authorize. |
| `clientId` | `string` | The OAuth client id the cached tokens were issued to. |
| `tokenCachePath` | `string?` | The directory the File and DPAPI backends store values in, or [`null`](https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/csharp/language-reference/keywords/null) for the per-user default. |
| `logger` | `Microsoft.Extensions.Logging.ILogger<Microsoft.OData.Mcp.Authentication.Outbound.LatchkeyTokenCache>` | The logger this instance records cache outcomes to. |

#### Exceptions

| Exception | Description |
| - | - |
| `ArgumentNullException` | Thrown when *serviceRoot* or *logger* is [`null`](https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/csharp/language-reference/keywords/null). |
| `ArgumentException` | Thrown when *clientId* is empty or white space, or *serviceRoot* is not an absolute URI. |

#### Examples

```csharp theme={null}
services.AddSingleton(sp => new LatchkeyTokenCache(
    new Uri("https://api.example.com/odata/"),
    "client-a",
    options.TokenCachePath,
    sp.GetRequiredService<ILogger<LatchkeyTokenCache>>()));
services.AddSingleton<ITokenCache>(sp => sp.GetRequiredService<LatchkeyTokenCache>());
```

#### Remarks

The backing store is created eagerly, so an unusable credential store surfaces at construction rather
than on the first OData request. Call [String)](https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/api/microsoft.odata.mcp.authentication.outbound.latchkeytokencache.verifypersistence\(system.string\)) before constructing to
fail first with an actionable message instead.

###  .ctor Inherited

> [!NOTE]
>
> Inherited from `object`

#### Syntax

```csharp theme={null}
public Object()
```

## Methods

###  ClearAsync

Removes this cache's slot from the credential store, so the next start runs a fresh grant.

#### Syntax

```csharp theme={null}
public System.Threading.Tasks.Task ClearAsync(System.Threading.CancellationToken cancellationToken)
```

#### Parameters

| Name | Type | Description |
| - | - | - |
| `cancellationToken` | `System.Threading.CancellationToken` | The token that cancels the delete. |

#### Returns

Type: `System.Threading.Tasks.Task`
A task that completes once the slot is gone, whether or not it existed.

#### Examples

```csharp theme={null}
await cache.ClearAsync(cancellationToken);
```

###  ComputeKey

Computes the Latchkey key a service root and client id pair caches its tokens under.

#### Syntax

```csharp theme={null}
public static string ComputeKey(System.Uri serviceRoot, string clientId)
```

#### Parameters

| Name | Type | Description |
| - | - | - |
| `serviceRoot` | `System.Uri` | The absolute OData service root the cached tokens authorize. |
| `clientId` | `string` | The OAuth client id the cached tokens were issued to. |

#### Returns

Type: `string`
The lowercase hex SHA-256 digest of `serviceRoot.AbsoluteUri + "\n" + clientId`, always 64
characters long.

#### Exceptions

| Exception | Description |
| - | - |
| `ArgumentNullException` | Thrown when *serviceRoot* is [`null`](https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/csharp/language-reference/keywords/null). |
| `ArgumentException` | Thrown when *clientId* is empty or white space, or *serviceRoot* is not an absolute URI. |

#### Examples

```csharp theme={null}
var key = LatchkeyTokenCache.ComputeKey(new Uri("https://api.example.com/odata/"), "client-a");
// 64 lowercase hex characters
```

#### Remarks

The newline separator keeps the two inputs unambiguous, so a service root that ends with the text of
a client id cannot collide with a different pair. The digest is deterministic across processes and
platforms, which is what lets a restart find the slot the previous run wrote.

###  Equals Inherited Virtual

> [!NOTE]
>
> Inherited from `object`

#### Syntax

```csharp theme={null}
public virtual bool Equals(object obj)
```

#### Parameters

| Name | Type | Description |
| - | - | - |
| `obj` | `object?` | - |

#### Returns

Type: `bool`

###  Equals Inherited

> [!NOTE]
>
> Inherited from `object`

#### Syntax

```csharp theme={null}
public static bool Equals(object objA, object objB)
```

#### Parameters

| Name | Type | Description |
| - | - | - |
| `objA` | `object?` | - |
| `objB` | `object?` | - |

#### Returns

Type: `bool`

###  GetHashCode Inherited Virtual

> [!NOTE]
>
> Inherited from `object`

#### Syntax

```csharp theme={null}
public virtual int GetHashCode()
```

#### Returns

Type: `int`

###  GetTokensAsync

Reads the cached token container for this cache's service root and client id.

#### Syntax

```csharp theme={null}
public System.Threading.Tasks.ValueTask<ModelContextProtocol.Authentication.TokenContainer> GetTokensAsync(System.Threading.CancellationToken cancellationToken)
```

#### Parameters

| Name | Type | Description |
| - | - | - |
| `cancellationToken` | `System.Threading.CancellationToken` | The token that cancels the read. |

#### Returns

Type: `System.Threading.Tasks.ValueTask<ModelContextProtocol.Authentication.TokenContainer?>`
The cached container, or [`null`](https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/csharp/language-reference/keywords/null) when nothing is cached or the cached bytes could not
be read back as a usable container.

#### Exceptions

| Exception | Description |
| - | - |
| `LatchkeyBackendUnavailableException` | Thrown when the credential store itself became unusable after this cache was constructed. |

#### Examples

```csharp theme={null}
var tokens = await cache.GetTokensAsync(cancellationToken);
if (tokens is null)
{
    // Run an interactive grant.
}
```

#### Remarks

An entry the store cannot unprotect, or that is not valid JSON, deserializes to [`null`](https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/csharp/language-reference/keywords/null),
or carries no access token, is unusable — the DPAPI master key may have changed, or a previous write
may have been truncated. Such an entry is deleted and reported at warning level naming only
[Key](https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/api/microsoft.odata.mcp.authentication.outbound.latchkeytokencache.key), never the payload, so the caller falls through to a fresh grant instead of failing
repeatedly.

A `LatchkeyBackendUnavailableException` is deliberately excluded from that handling and
propagates instead. It reports that the whole store became unusable after construction — a locked
Secret Service keyring, a cache directory that lost its permissions — not that this entry is corrupt.
Treating it as corruption would misdescribe the fault and, where reads fail while deletes succeed,
would destroy a still-valid refresh token over a transient condition.

###  GetType Inherited

> [!NOTE]
>
> Inherited from `object`

#### Syntax

```csharp theme={null}
public System.Type GetType()
```

#### Returns

Type: `System.Type`

###  MemberwiseClone Inherited

> [!NOTE]
>
> Inherited from `object`

#### Syntax

```csharp theme={null}
protected internal object MemberwiseClone()
```

#### Returns

Type: `object`

###  ReferenceEquals Inherited

> [!NOTE]
>
> Inherited from `object`

#### Syntax

```csharp theme={null}
public static bool ReferenceEquals(object objA, object objB)
```

#### Parameters

| Name | Type | Description |
| - | - | - |
| `objA` | `object?` | - |
| `objB` | `object?` | - |

#### Returns

Type: `bool`

###  StoreTokensAsync

Writes a token container into this cache's single slot, replacing whatever it held.

#### Syntax

```csharp theme={null}
public System.Threading.Tasks.ValueTask StoreTokensAsync(ModelContextProtocol.Authentication.TokenContainer tokens, System.Threading.CancellationToken cancellationToken)
```

#### Parameters

| Name | Type | Description |
| - | - | - |
| `tokens` | `ModelContextProtocol.Authentication.TokenContainer` | The container to persist. |
| `cancellationToken` | `System.Threading.CancellationToken` | The token that cancels the write. |

#### Returns

Type: `System.Threading.Tasks.ValueTask`
A task that completes once the container is durable in the credential store.

#### Exceptions

| Exception | Description |
| - | - |
| `ArgumentNullException` | Thrown when *tokens* is [`null`](https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/csharp/language-reference/keywords/null). |

#### Examples

```csharp theme={null}
await cache.StoreTokensAsync(tokens, cancellationToken);
```

#### Remarks

The whole container is persisted, including `ClientId`,
`ClientSecret`,
`TokenEndpointAuthMethod`, and
`AuthorizationServer`, so a cold start can refresh without
re-running dynamic client registration.

###  ToString Inherited Virtual

> [!NOTE]
>
> Inherited from `object`

#### Syntax

```csharp theme={null}
public virtual string ToString()
```

#### Returns

Type: `string?`

###  VerifyPersistence

Reports whether the credential store this cache would use can actually round-trip a value on this
host.

#### Syntax

```csharp theme={null}
public static bool VerifyPersistence(string tokenCachePath)
```

#### Parameters

| Name | Type | Description |
| - | - | - |
| `tokenCachePath` | `string?` | The directory the File and DPAPI backends store values in, or [`null`](https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/csharp/language-reference/keywords/null) for the per-user default. |

#### Returns

Type: `bool`
[`true`](https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/csharp/language-reference/builtin-types/bool) when a throwaway value survives a write, read, and delete; otherwise
[`false`](https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/csharp/language-reference/builtin-types/bool).

#### Examples

```csharp theme={null}
if (!LatchkeyTokenCache.VerifyPersistence(options.TokenCachePath))
{
    throw new InvalidOperationException("Credential store is not usable on this host; unlock the OS keyring or pass --token-cache.");
}
```

#### Remarks

Call this at startup, before constructing the cache, so an unusable keyring fails first with an
actionable message rather than midway through a grant. It never throws: a store that cannot be
reached reports [`false`](https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/csharp/language-reference/builtin-types/bool).
