# LoopbackAuthorizationCallback

> The RFC 8252 loopback redirect endpoint the authorization code grant hands to the authorization server: an [HttpListener](https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/...

## Definition

**Assembly:** Microsoft.OData.Mcp.Authentication.dll

**Namespace:** Microsoft.OData.Mcp.Authentication.Outbound

**Inheritance:** System.Object

## Syntax

```csharp theme={null}
Microsoft.OData.Mcp.Authentication.Outbound.LoopbackAuthorizationCallback
```

## Summary

The RFC 8252 loopback redirect endpoint the authorization code grant hands to the authorization server:
an [HttpListener](https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/api/system.net.httplistener) bound to `http://127.0.0.1:{ephemeral}/callback/` that accepts exactly
one authorization response, binds it to the expected `state`, and hands back the SDK
`AuthorizationResult`.

## Remarks

The default host is the literal `127.0.0.1` and never `localhost`, per
`specs/v3/AUTHENTICATION.md` "Security & Privacy": a DNS name can resolve somewhere else and a
second process listening on the same name would be handed the authorization code. The port is chosen by
binding a [TcpListener](https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/api/system.net.sockets.tcplistener) to port zero and reading back what the operating system assigned, so
two concurrent sign-ins never collide. Per `AUTH-12` nothing here logs, echoes, or renders the
`code`: the browser page says only that the window can be closed.

## Examples

```csharp theme={null}
using var callback = LoopbackAuthorizationCallback.Start(redirectOverride: null);
var begin = grant.Begin(metadata, clientId, scope, resource, callback.RedirectUri);
// ... the operator completes sign-in in a browser ...
var result = await callback.WaitAsync(begin.State, cancellationToken);
```

## Constructors

### .ctor Inherited

> [!NOTE]
>
> Inherited from `object`

#### Syntax

```csharp theme={null}
public Object()
```

## Properties

### RedirectUri

Gets the absolute redirect URI this instance is listening on, which is exactly the
`redirect_uri` the authorization request and the token request must both carry.

#### Syntax

```csharp theme={null}
public System.Uri RedirectUri { get; }
```

#### Property Value

Type: `System.Uri`

## Methods

### Dispose

#### Syntax

```csharp theme={null}
public void Dispose()
```

#### Remarks

Idempotent: a callback whose [CancellationToken)](https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/api/microsoft.odata.mcp.authentication.outbound.loopbackauthorizationcallback.waitasync\(system.string,system.threading.cancellationtoken\)) already ran is
disposed a second time by the caller's `using` without error.

| - | - | - |
| `objA` | `object?` | - |
| `objB` | `object?` | - |

#### Returns

Type: `bool`

### Start

Binds a loopback listener for the authorization response and starts accepting connections.

#### Syntax

```csharp theme={null}
public static Microsoft.OData.Mcp.Authentication.Outbound.LoopbackAuthorizationCallback Start(System.Uri redirectOverride)
```

#### Parameters

| Name | Type | Description |
| - | - | - |
| `redirectOverride` | `System.Uri?` | The operator's `--redirect-uri`, used verbatim; or [`null`](https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/csharp/language-reference/keywords/null) to bind `http://127.0.0.1:{ephemeral}/callback/`. |

#### Returns

Type: `Microsoft.OData.Mcp.Authentication.Outbound.LoopbackAuthorizationCallback`
A started callback whose [LoopbackAuthorizationCallback.RedirectUri](https://ai.easyaf.dev/odata-mcp/api-reference/Microsoft/OData/Mcp/Authentication/Outbound/LoopbackAuthorizationCallback.md#redirecturi) is the effective redirect URI.

#### Exceptions

| Exception | Description |
| - | - |
| `ArgumentException` | Thrown when *redirectOverride* is not an absolute URI. |
| `OutboundDiscoveryException` | Thrown when *redirectOverride* is not `http` on a loopback host, and when the |
| operating system refuses to bind the redirect URI. | |

#### Examples

```csharp theme={null}
using var callback = LoopbackAuthorizationCallback.Start(options.RedirectUri);
Console.Error.WriteLine($"Waiting for the authorization response on {callback.RedirectUri}");
```

#### Remarks

The free port is discovered by binding a [TcpListener](https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/api/system.net.sockets.tcplistener) to port zero and immediately
releasing it, then handing that port to [HttpListener](https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/api/system.net.httplistener). A bind failure — an override
naming a port another process already owns, or a platform where [HttpListener](https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/api/system.net.httplistener) needs a
URL reservation — fails first here with the prefix in the message, rather than half way through a
sign-in the operator has already started in a browser.

An override is also held to the RFC 8252 section 7.3 policy this class exists to implement: it must
be `http` on `127.0.0.1`, `localhost`, or `::1`. A public `https` redirect
cannot be listened on here at all, and accepting one would leave the operator waiting on a listener
the authorization server is never going to reach.

### ToString Inherited Virtual

> [!NOTE]
>
> Inherited from `object`

#### Syntax

```csharp theme={null}
public virtual string ToString()
```

#### Returns

Type: `string?`

### WaitAsync

Accepts exactly one authorization response, validates its `state`, and returns the SDK result
the token exchange runs on.

#### Syntax

```csharp theme={null}
public System.Threading.Tasks.Task<ModelContextProtocol.Authentication.AuthorizationResult> WaitAsync(string expectedState, System.Threading.CancellationToken cancellationToken)
```

#### Parameters

| Name | Type | Description |
| - | - | - |
| `expectedState` | `string` | The `state` the authorization request was started with, matched exactly. |
| `cancellationToken` | `System.Threading.CancellationToken` | The token that abandons the wait, aborting the listener. |

#### Returns

Type: `System.Threading.Tasks.Task<ModelContextProtocol.Authentication.AuthorizationResult>`
The authorization response's `code`, `state`, and RFC 9207 `iss`.

#### Exceptions

| Exception | Description |
| - | - |
| `ArgumentException` | Thrown when *expectedState* is [`null`](https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/csharp/language-reference/keywords/null), empty, or whitespace. |
| `OperationCanceledException` | Thrown when *cancellationToken* is cancelled before a response arrives. |
| `OutboundDiscoveryException` | Thrown when the response carries no `state`, a `state` that is not an exact match, or no |
| `code`; and when the listener stops before a response arrives. | |
| `OAuthTokenException` | Thrown when the authorization server redirected an RFC 6749 section 4.1.2.1 error instead of a code. |

#### Examples

```csharp theme={null}
using var callback = LoopbackAuthorizationCallback.Start(null);
var begin = grant.Begin(metadata, clientId, scope, resource, callback.RedirectUri);
var result = await callback.WaitAsync(begin.State, cancellationToken);
var response = await grant.ExchangeAsync(metadata, result, begin.CodeVerifier, clientId, callback.RedirectUri, resource, cancellationToken);
```

#### Remarks

The listener is closed before this method returns or throws, so a mismatched `state` — the
loopback CSRF case — leaves no socket a second attacker could reach. The comparison is
[Ordinal](https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/api/system.stringcomparison.ordinal) on the whole value: a prefix match would defeat the point of
binding the request to the response.
